Our Story

HEY HEARTBREAKERS, I’M JULIA, THE OWNER of heartbreak honey.

The concept behind Heartbreak Honey first took shape in 2020, when I was given a college assignment to create a small store business plan. Just my luck, the same time I was assigned this project was the same time I was broken up with. As I’m sure whoever is reading this knows, breakups suck.

If you’re anything like me, the first thing you do after a breakup, besides rot in bed, is online shop. I needed my confidence back and retail therapy was my coping mechanism for that.

I was finding every opportunity I could to redefine my style. I knew the pieces that were missing in my closet, but more often than not, I ended up with a cart full of items I didn’t want and an empty bank account to match. Turns out, this frustration was the exact market research I needed to get my business plan started, and heartbreak was the motivator behind it all.

I realized There was a need in an overly saturated market for a brand that was cohesive- Combining storytelling and apparel, where each collection had a narrative behind it with a limited number of items to choose from.
This is when the idea for HBH really began.

After finishing the course, and graduating college a few years later, I still didn’t fully have the courage to launch it. So there it sat, in my head, waiting to be seen. I was constantly convincing myself that it, “Wasn’t the right time”, or I, “Didn’t have any money” to start. But truthfully, what I was too scared to admit was, “I’m terrified to take all of the ideas in my head and put them out into the world, just to be heartbroken again if no one likes them.”

I spent years dabbling in various jobs—sales, marketing, bartending, customer service—seeking direction, and to be honest avoiding my real passion, until New Year's Day 2023, when I lost my dad.

Heartbreak happens in so many different forms. Whichever form that may be, part of putting yourself back together and being confident to get back into the world starts with being confident in what you wear.
